Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' Gets 8-Minute Ovation At Cannes, Team's Dancing Celebration On Red Carpet Wins Hearts

Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" received an impressive eight-minute standing ovation during its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. This film is the first Indian movie in 30 years to compete for the prestigious Palme d'Or, marking a significant achievement for Indian cinema.

The "All We Imagine As Light" Team Danced On The Cannes Red Carpet

The film’s team, including Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon, Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Ranabir Das, Julien Graff, Zico Maitra, Thomas Hakim, and director Payal Kapadia, made a stylish appearance on the red carpet. Their celebration, including dancing on the red carpet, won over many hearts.

Kani Kusruti made a statement with her unique watermelon clutch, symbolising a call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Divya Prabha dazzled in a copper-hued gown, a stark contrast to her character in the film, while Hridhu Haroon sported a traditional veshti and a long embellished kurta. Kapadia and her co-producer/cinematographer, Ranabir Das, opted for classic black formal wear.

Competing against renowned filmmakers such as Jacques Audiard, Yorgos Lanthimos, David Cronenberg, Paul Schrader, and Jia Zhangke, Kapadia's film stood out. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian praised it for its "freshness and emotional clarity," comparing Kapadia's storytelling to the legendary Satyajit Ray. Sophie Monk-Kaufman of IndieWire described the film as "gorgeous and absorbing," highlighting its sensual depiction of everyday life. Fionnuala Halligan commended it for its strong romantic streak, drawing parallels with Wong Kar-wai’s work. Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film is a departure from Bollywood's typical style, yet its story of women seeking love and happiness in a turbulent world resonates deeply.

As the film continues to garner praise, the big question remains: will the jury be as impressed as the audience? The answer will be revealed when the awards are announced at the end of the festival.
